On the way to the Nationals

Royal Albert HallOnce again, the Tongwynlais Temperance Band will represent Wales at the National Brass Band Championships held at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The band has been pleased to accept the invitation issued by event organisers Kapitol Promotions, and will be joining the Cory Band and Tredegar Town Band as one of three Welsh bands representing the Nation at the famous finale to the brass band contesting year.

The band earned it’s place through a spirited performance of Philip Sparke’s Cambridge Variations at the Regional competition held in the Art Deco surroundings of the Brangwyn Hall. The performance was described by adjudicators Dr Robert Childs and David Hirst as “full of drive” and “exciting and well directed”.

Leading brass band journalist and editor of 4barsrest.com commented on how a resurgent Tongwynlais Temperance claimed its place comfortably¬†with “a high quality rendition directed with calm assuredness by Michael Fowles.” The performance was enhanced by quality contributions from the band’s principal players and has set a clear marker of the band’s intent ahead of its return to local contesting in the South Wales league in May.

Contest Secretary Jenny Jones added her congratulations to the players stating, “It was a great performance by the band and one we can all be proud of. The dedication of each individual and the musical leadership team of Chris Bond and Glyn Williams laid a strong foundation for the work put in by Mike.”

The band has now returned to the band room ahead of its performance as part of the televised Band Cymru competition promoted by the Welsh broadcaster S4C.
