Joint Concert with Cardiff’s Youth Bands

Cardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service have teamed up with the Tongwynlais Temperance band, the Premier Championship Section Band of Cardiff, to perform a joint concert at the City Hall aiming to relight the spark of enthusiasm for brass bands in our Capital City.

At its prime the South Glamorgan Youth Brass Bands attracted hundreds of School children across all the primary and high schools in South Glamorgan (now the county of the City of Cardiff).  Progression was made from ‘the buzzers’ through to the brass classes and then on to the preliminary, Junior, Training, Transitional, High Schools’ and finally to the South Glamorgan Youth Brass Band.  Concerts from all of these bands and classes have taken place over the years from as far as DisneyLand in California to New York, Kiev, Malta and France.  In the early 80’s the South Glamorgan Youth Brass Band had progressed through all 4 sections of the brass band league (D to A) to become a Championship Section Brass Band competing against some of the finest Adult bands in the Country. One of the most influential conductors of the bands was Mr. Dewi Jones who was instrumental in the success of the SGYBB organisation and was a fine trumpet player himself.

Today, although the bands are still attracting many fine players, with so many other interests available, numbers interested in brass bands have dwindled so theCardiff County and Vale of Glamorgan Music Service are getting together with the Tongwynlais Temperance Band to put on a concert to showcase the current (and former!) High Schools’ and Youth Band players.

There are currently 4 members of Tongwynlais that were past players of the South Glamorgan Brass Band in the 80’s/90’s and can put their love of continuing to play in brass bands down to the experiences they had as children performing at concerts, competitions and going on tours with the county brass bands.

Jason Bevan, Chairman of the Tongwynlais Temperance Band said “I started playing at the age of 11 on the Euphonium that was probably bigger than me at the time and was in one of the Youth Brass Bands at the concerts held at St. Davids and City Hall in Cardiff.  Everyone just wanted to be a member of the Youth Band and play as well as them.  I’ve had so many enjoyable experiences through youth banding such as playing before the Rugby Games at Cardiff Arms Park but one of the highlights must be our tour to California in 1992 where we played at Disneyland, Seaworld and San Deigo.  It was a trip of a lifetime that I will never forget”.
Jason, along with Eve Nixon, Gareth Hann and Martyn Patterson (all current members of Tongwynlais Band) were previous members of the County Youth band and have gone on to be award winning brass and percussion players, with Martyn especially standing out as the current Scottish Open Championship soloist of 2012.
There are many past players out there who we’d love to see at the concert – please come along to support the current Youth Bands!!

Tongwynlais Band are very much looking forward to performing at the joint concert, hoping to inspire a new generation of Youth players to continue their playing for many years to come, and get the maximum enjoyment out of banding.

The concert takes place at City Hall, Cardiff at 7pm on Monday 30th April 2012.  Tickets are available on the door priced at £6/£4.
