A great day of music making in any language

“A fantastic performance,” “well directed and bossed by the MD!” “Full of power and dynamic contrasts,” together with “an amazing solo euphonium contribution”, were just some of the superlatives used to describe the Tongwynlais Band performance at the semi-final round of BandCymru 2016. The competition organised by RondoMedia which will be featured on the Welsh Language broadcast S4C was held at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of April.

Competing alongside the Llwydcoed Band and the Chamber Wind ensemble from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, the band launched the second round of competing into the already charged atmosphere with a exhilarating performance of Paul Lovett-Cooper’s ‘Enter the Galaxies’. Coming slightly closer to earth the band then turned to the arranging talents of its cornet playing composer Dan Hall and his clever and contemporary inspired arrangement of Debussy’s  ‘Claire De Lune’.

Matt Rowe then sent the audience into the outer reaches of space with ‘The Dance of the Spiral Galaxies’ from Jonathan Bates’ technically demanding ‘Stratos’, Euphonium Concerto. Powered along by the twin after burners of band on top form, Matt delivered an assured and adrenaline charged solo feature, adding to his already growing reputation as one of banding’s up and coming Euphonium talents in the process.

As a finale, the band turned to it’s conductor Christopher Bond and his concert closer ‘Sprites and Flares’. Chosen from his previous commission by the Leyland Band and with the band’s current concert and entertainment programme in mind, the MD drew even more power and precision from the band to end the set.
